Stronger and Lighter 2015 Ford F-150 Wins KBB Award
In order to improve capability and increase fuel economy, Ford engineers worked tirelessly on the new 2015 F-150 to shed weight. The use of high strength steel throughout the frame and military-grade aluminum-alloy for the body has been talked about by many, and accounts for approximately 450 lbs. of weight savings. An additional 250 lbs. of weight was taken out of the F-150 by engineers who redesigned a number of other components.
Other big weight saving changes include the use of an electronic parking brake (26.9 lbs. saved), a stronger, yet smaller rear axle (35 lbs. saved) and lighter steering knuckles (16.3 lbs. saved). Ford engineers were also able to save a few pounds for each component with a lighter front bumper, magnesium transfer case and lighter, rust resistant fenders.
The new F-150’s interior received lighter and more durable seats, with 31.7 lbs. saved in the front seat and 14.7 lbs. saved in the rear seat. The F-150 is also the first full-size pickup to feature Repreve seat fabric made from recyclable materials. Lighter materials used in the F-150’s instrument panel also have helped save 2.5 lbs. while reducing glare and improving controls.
These combined weight savings help the F-150 achieve 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway when paired with the 2.7 liter EcoBoost V6. The new F-150 also has the best payload capacity and towing capability of any vehicle in its class, at 3,300 and 12,200 lbs., respectively when properly equipped.
These impressive improvements means the new 2015 Ford F-150 has won no shortage of awards, earning 2015 North American Truck/Utility of the Year, 2015 Motor Trend Truck of the Year and the Texas Auto Writers Association Truck of Texas.
Last week, Kelley Blue Book named Ford the Best Overall Truck Brand, an award Ford has won six out of the seven times it has been given. The award takes into account the favorable consumer perception of the F-150 and Ford Super Duty pickup trucks.
